Ship to Shore | STS

The Port of Port of Spain (PPOS) owns and operates four (4) Ship to Shore Gantry Cranes (STS) of varying sizes, height, outreach, speed and capacities. The STS Gantry Cranes are based on the Quayside of the PPOS and are used for the loading and offloading of Containers and other cargo from ships or vessels and placing them onto Trailer/ Trucks that traverses the Container Terminal. Each STS Crane is fitted with a Gantry Structure, Boom, Trolley, Machinery House, Electrical Control Room, hoisting mechanisms, Headblock, Spreader Bar and Operator’s Cabin. The Boom can span the entire Container Ship and can be raised or lowered to facilitate the safe docking and undocking of the ship. The Crane is operated from the Operator’s Cabin and the specialized operator can move the cabin, trolley and Spreader Bar along the boom to access the Containers on the ship’s deck or in the hatch.

Mobile Harbour Crane | MHC

The PPOS owns and operates one (1) Mobile Harbour Crane that was manufactured by Gottwald Port Technology in the Year 2003. The Mobile Harbour Crane is very versatile and can handle intermodal Containers, general cargo, out of gauge Cargo and heavy bulk machinery up to a to weight of 100 Long Tons. This crane offers high flexibility to quayside operations and enhances the PPOS operational capability.
The Mobile Harbour Crane is fitted with a Superstructure, Chassis, Tower, Boom, Cable Reel System, Rotator, Spreader Bar, Electrical Control Room, hoisting mechanisms, Operator’s Cabin and travels on 28 Tyres. The Crane has an overall height of approximately 220 feet (With its boom in the upward position) and can reach out to span a Vessel or Ship up to 130 Feet.

Rubber Tyred Gantry Cranes | RTGs
The Port of Port of Spain (PPOS) currently owns and operates twelve (12) RTG Cranes of varying height, speeds and a standard capacity of 40 Long Tons. The Rubber Tyred Gantry Cranes (RTGs) are used to load and unload Containers from the Tractor/ Trailers which traverses from the Quayside to the full Container storage areas in the Container terminal.
Each RTG Crane is fitted with a Gantry Structure, Trolley, Engine/ Generator compartment, Electrical Control Room, Hoisting mechanisms, Headblock, Spreader Bar and Operator’s Cabin. These RTG Cranes span five (5) Container rows and one (1) Truck lane and are also used to load or unload Tractor/ Trailers that bring export containers into the port or import containers that are delivered to local businesses.
RTG Cranes allow Container Terminals to maximize the use of the available Real Estate space to store large quantities of intermodal shipping Containers.

Reach Stackers | RS

The PPOS owns and operates three (3) Reachstackers; two (2) that were manufactured in the Year 2004 and one (1) new Machine that was delivered in January 2023.
Reachstackers are used mainly for loading and unloading refrigerated containers from the yard to customers Tractor/ Trailers for local delivery or export. The Reachstacker is a very versatile Machine that is fitted with a Chassis, Boom, Rotator, Spreader Bar, Diesel Engine, Transmission, Drive Axle, six (6) pneumatic Tyres and Operator’s Cabin. The operator can telescope the Boom, reach over containers and engage other containers for delivery to the customer. Reachstackers are able to place containers straight onto the Tractor/ Trailers or stack containers on top of each other for storage. They usually range in capacities up to 45 Metric Tons and can travel with loaded containers at approximately 22 Kilometers per hour.
Empty Container Handlers | ECHs

The PPOS owns and operates seven (7) Empty Container Handlers (ECH) including two (2) new ECHs that were commissioned in the Year 2022.
Empty Container Handlers are used for handling empty containers that are stored in the empty container yards. These Machines are able to transport empty containers and stack them in rows up to five (5) containers high. The ECH is fitted with a Chassis, Mast, carriage, side- pick spreader bar, Engine, Transmission, Drive Axle, six (6) pneumatic Tyres and Operator’s Cabin. These machines are very important for storing containers in areas that have limited space.

Terminal Tractor Trucks, also known as Internal Transport Vehicles (ITVs) are robust mobile Machines that are used to haul container trailers between the ships and the storage area. Its powerful engines and transmission allow it to haul containers, (both full and empty) virtually anywhere on the terminal with minimal effort. The PPOS owns and operates twenty-three (23) of these Terminal Tractor Trucks in the Container Terminal.<br>

Terminal Trailers
Number of Equipment: Forty-Eight (48)
The PPOS Terminal trailers; unlike regular Container trailers, are designed for safe, quick loading and off-loading of containers by eliminating the container locking mechanism and increasing the height of the guides. These trailers can carry up to 65 LT and can transport 20 Feet, 40 Feet, 2 x 20 Feet and 45 Feet Containers.

Forklift Trucks

The PPOS operates fifteen (15) Fork Lift Trucks that are used at the One Stop Barrel Shop, Operations Division and the Equipment Division to move bulk cargo around the terminal and sheds, or out of packed containers, and also to carry out maintenance and repairs on the PPOS Equipment.
