Port Authority of Trinidad and Tobago

The Caribbean Community (CARICOM) is an organisation of 15 Caribbean nations and dependencies. CARICOM’s main purposes are to promote economic integration and cooperation among its members, to ensure that the benefits of integration are equitably shared, and to coordinate foreign policy. Its major activities involve coordinating economic policies and development planning; devising and instituting special projects for the less-developed countries within its jurisdiction; operating as a regional single market for many of its members (Caricom Single Market); and handling regional trade disputes. The secretariat headquarters is based in Georgetown, Guyana.

Cargo

This wharf was established to facilitate trade between the fifteen (15) Caricom member states. The type of cargo that is permitted at the Wharf can be classified as Less than Container Load (LCL) or General purpose cargo consisting of both perishable and non-perishable goods. The type of cargo transported between the member states can range from household items, to vehicles, to both light and heavy equipment.

Tables 1 and 2 provides information on total goods loaded and discharged for years 2022 and 2023, highlighting the agriculture products tonnage.

15 FULL MEMBER NATIONS

Role of CUSTOMS and EXCISE DIVISION

The Customs and Excise Division (CED) is a Division of the Ministry of Finance and is headed by a Comptroller. CED core function is to collect revenue on behalf of the Government of Trinidad and Tobago.

At CARICOM Wharf, the vessels must get clearance from both the CED and Immigration Division before the discharge and reload of cargo can begin. 

Functions:

  • To examine personal and commercial imports / exports as necessary
  • To collect respective revenue on imported / exported goods in accordance with Customs regulations.
  • To authorize the discharging / loading of cargo on vessels
  • To examine and authorize delivery of cargo in accordance to Customs regulations.
  • Prevent illegal imports / exports of goods.
